VR Explorations

I like to play around with VR development from time to time. Below are some of my experiments with VR in Unity, starting with my favorite project: my ongoing model train layout.

The model train layout affords me the opportunity to solve small, iterative problems in VR, like coding a train that follows the rails correctly and making a railroad crossing with functional gates. These first images were modeled in Cinema 4D and rendered to look extra pretty.

All train layouts need at least one bridge!

This layout has TWO bridges!

The railroad crossing was a fun little project. The blinking lights are little spheres that scale from 1 to 0 and back again.

Here's the model train layout recorded in VR, with some breakdowns of each step along the way.

Here's a situation I ran into while trying to generate the railroad ties along the track spline. Fun, right? Took a while to figure this one out!

Need some water for your engine? We gotcha covered.

You can do a little bit of boating out here too.

The perfect little mountain retreat.

Here's some of the code that runs the railroad crossing. Cool, huh?

One of my first playgrounds in Unity VR was using this van and house as testing grounds for shaders and environmental effects, plus a little dose of the surreal.

Another fun project was sculpting a house and yard in Adobe Medium and then rendering it all pretty in Cinema 4D.
