Waveforms Web Comic

Waveforms is an experiment in digital painting and universe building. I created the comic in order to work on my character design, digital painting, and storytelling skills, and the skills and techniques I've learned from it have had a huge influence on the rest of my design work. Waveforms affords me the opportunity to draw all of my favorite things: cities, vehicles, spaceships, and sci-fi worlds. Everything is digitally painted with classical perspective and figure drawing techniques, with no help from 3D programs or photographed textures.

An important element in Waveforms is well-balanced visual complexity. The comic is an exercise in composition and detail work and the below scene is a fine example of that. Click the image for the full-resolution version.

Another important element in Waveforms is technique building. The prospect of creating the metrolpolis in the distance was a daunting one, but after a few studies I worked out a method that started with broad square-brush shapes for composition and finished with gradual overall detail enhancement that allowed me to create the entire cityscape in a long evening and long morning.

Waveforms has allowed me to focus on cinema-inspired framing, artistic techniques, and perspective drawing and affords me the opportunity to craft the look and feel of the story from the ground up.
